"to wait" is more baed on the verb "had",and "waiting" has a feeling of dependence,that means,"to wait" is more special

Is it abstract?
More clearly,if we didn't use the word "had","to wait" might be not correct.
e.g.:We spent anxious couple of weeks to wait the results of the experiment.
THAT IS OBVIOUSLY WRONG....
